The government offers property tax exemptions to help lower or eliminate property tax bills for eligible homeowners. These exemptions are typically provided to veterans or people with disabilities, but others may qualify as well.
What exemptions are there for property taxes?
Common exemptions include:
- Senior exemptions
- Disability exemptions
- Veterans exemptions
- Income-based exemptions
- Homestead exemptions
How do I get a property tax exemption?
The first thing to do is confirm your eligibility:
- Check with your local and state government and taxing authorities
- Check with the Department of Veterans Affairs (if you are a veteran or servicemember)
Once you know you’re eligible, complete any required paperwork as quickly as possible. Your state or local tax collector’s (or department of revenue’s) website may provide information about the application process and any deadlines.
After you’re approved for a tax exemption, you’ll need to provide Valon with official documentation from the taxing authority showing the tax reduction or tax refund amount. You can email this documentation to support@valon.com or mail it to:
Valon Mortgage, Inc.
9450 SW Gemini Dr
PMB 28754
Beaverton, Oregon 97008-7105
We’ll then apply the exemption and reassess your monthly escrow payment amount.
💡 Tip: Tax bills and insurance premiums can increase, causing your escrow payment to go up. Although these changes might be unexpected, they're entirely normal. If you’re eligible, tax exemptions can help decrease your bills and ultimately lower your escrow payment.
What if Valon made a tax payment that didn’t include my exemption?
The tax bills we pay factor in any applicable exemptions. If we made a payment that does not reflect your exemption, please send us your exemption documents (if you haven’t already) and we can investigate on your behalf.
